UPF 50+ on a shirt is a rating of the cloth: dry and unstretched, the knit lets one fiftieth of the sun’s UV through to the skin it covers, about two percent, and it measures UVA and UVB together where the SPF on a sunscreen measures UVB alone. Wet or pulled tight it lets through more, and it does nothing for the face, the neck or the hands. That is the whole of the claim, and it is written under a published source at the foot of this page.

The rest is what the shirt is like to wear. The women’s rash guard is cut long, to sit over a swimsuit or a pair of swim shorts, with a quarter zip at the neck for the heat and, on the newer pair, a pocket. Cinched at the sides it reads as a tunic on the way to lunch. The men’s cut is the fishing shirt, with a chest pocket and a longer body, in a long sleeve and a short. The boys’ shirt is the same knit sized for a child. All of them wick, dry fast and go in the machine cold.

Does an Ewedoos rash guard replace sunscreen?

On the skin it covers, it is the better of the two, because it does not wash off in the water. On the face, the neck, the hands and the legs it does nothing, and those still need a broad-spectrum sunscreen and, for the face, a hat. Wet or stretched, the knit lets more UV through than the rating says.

Can you swim in an Ewedoos rash guard?

Yes: it is a swim knit that dries fast, and the long body stays down in the water. Out of the water it is a sun shirt, and with the sides cinched it is a tunic over a swimsuit.

Is the men’s Ewedoos sun shirt the same as the women’s?

The same UPF 50+ knit and the same quick-dry finish in a men’s cut: a longer body, a chest pocket on the fishing shirt, and a short-sleeve version. The boys’ shirt is the same knit sized down.
