A flare changes what a legging is for. The waist and the thigh are the legging you know, high rise, two side pockets, a pocket in the back of the band. Below the knee the leg opens into a bootcut that falls over a shoe the way a trouser does. Under a long top or a blazer it reads as a pant. That is what lets it go to an office, a dinner and a class in one day without a change.

The fleece-lined flare is the same shape for the cold, with a brushed face inside, a heart-shaped seam at the back, and a detail the summer pair does not have: marks on the inside of the hem so that a shorter woman can cut the leg to her own length in three steps without a tailor. Both pairs stretch four ways and both sit at the natural waist. The winter one is heavier, dries slower and stays in a drawer from May to October.
